What do you eat as a sweet treat when you are in Mexico? We know about the traditional desserts such as Tres Leches Cake and flans. How about the everyday sweets? What do they indulge in for a sugar rush and more importantly, can we make them at home?

Chocolate, of course, is a popular treat. Since Mexico is the home of chocolate, they make many confections that use this delicious ingredient. If you want to try commercial Mexican chocolates, there are many online shops where you can get the real thing. If you want to make something from chocolate, Mexican hot chocolate or a hot beverage called atole are good recipes to begin with.

Lots of communities are fortunate enough to have Latino markets. If you are, have one near you, stop by, and explore all the different foods there. While you are at it, pick up some Mexican chocolate. It is purer than what we are used to and less refined. It has a crumbly texture. Do not be surprised if you taste nutmeg or cinnamon with this chocolate, it is very common for them to be mixed together.

Candied fruit is very popular. For example, candied limes with coconut filling are a simple candy that can be made at home. The candying process makes the fruit shine like stained glass. You can candy any citrus fruit or their peelings.

Candies made of almond paste are another common confection. The paste is made of powdered sugar and blanched almonds, bound together with egg white. Almond extract is added for flavor. The paste can be dyed various colors and shaped into almost anything you can imagine.

Little Eggs, or yemitas, are a special candy made in Guanajuato. These sweets are often wrapped in blue and white tissue paper in honor of the Virgin Mary and are given as favors at baptisms, communions, and fies

tas. Made of sugar, water, egg yolks, and sweet sherry, they are coated in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon before wrapping. They would be great to have on hand if you have a party with a Mexican theme, such as a celebration of Cinco de Mayo.

Who says Cinco de Mayo recipes have to be the same every year? Why not make flan one year and little Mexican candies the next? With such a festive mood in the air when this holiday rolls around, it is fun to think of new ways to surprise your guests so they have a great time.

To add these Mexican desserts to your celebration, try some new fun ways to serve these treats. Put them on platters, wrap them up, and use a piata or have bright colored bowls placed all around the room with sweets in them. Display the candied fruits in front of a light source to show off their wonderful stained glass look or serve them on light and dark plates to show off the colors. With the almond paste, you can shape the candies into different figures to honor our friends south of the border. They can be sombreros, maracas, and horses. Do not forget to give them lots of color. Most of all, have fun!
